The Spanish Tragedy
by Thomas Kyd

Venue: The New College Theater
Performance Dates: October 21-24, 28-30
In The Spanish Tragedy, Hieronimo, the grieving father of the murdered Horatio, is urged by the figure of Revenge to bring his son's killers to justice. In the process, Hieronimo, with the help of Horatio's girlfriend Bel-imperia, turns the entire court of Spain upside-down. Vigilante justice becomes allowable and divinely sanctioned in this dark, sexy, and viciously murderous play. Thomas Kyd, in The Spanish Tragedy, invented the revenge drama and the Machiavellian villain. This brilliant, seminal piece made plays like Hamlet possible and started a trend that led to the revenge films of today. Come audition for the play that literally takes you to hell and back and right into hell again.
